Suptulung — Sacred Places of Worship
Suptulung are the sacred places of worship for the Kirat Rai people. These are natural sites — often groves, mountains, rivers, caves, or specific trees — that are believed to be inhabited by spirits or deities. The Suptulung are centers of spiritual activity where rituals, prayers, and offerings are made. They represent the Kirat belief in the sanctity of nature and the presence of the divine in the natural world.
Sumnima and Paruhang
Sumnima and Paruhang are the supreme deities in the Kirat Rai religion. Sumnima is the mother goddess who represents feminine energy, fertility, and the nurturing aspect of nature. Paruhang is the father god who represents masculine energy, creation, and the sky. Together, they form the divine couple that governs the universe in Kirat cosmology.
Nakchhong / Mangpa / Bijuwa (Rai Priest)
The Nakchhong (also called Mangpa or Bijuwa in different Rai communities) is the traditional priest and spiritual leader of the Kirat Rai community. The Nakchhong is responsible for performing all major rituals, ceremonies, and spiritual functions according to the Kirat Mundhum. The position is typically hereditary and the priest serves as the bridge between the community and the spiritual realm.
Kirat Rai Shamanism
Kirat Rai shamanism is the traditional spiritual practice involving direct communication with spirits, deities, and the natural world through altered states of consciousness. The shaman (often the Nakchhong or a specialized practitioner) serves as a mediator between the human community and the spirit world, performing healing, divination, and ritual functions.
Kirat Mundhum
The Kirat Mundhum is the primary religious text and spiritual foundation of the Kirat people, including the Rai. It is a collection of hymns, prayers, rituals, and spiritual knowledge that has been passed down through generations. The Mundhum covers all aspects of Kirat life — from daily rituals to major life ceremonies, from agricultural practices to spiritual philosophy.
Chinlung — Sacred Groves
Chinlung refers to sacred groves or forests that are protected and revered by the Kirat Rai community. These are natural forest areas where trees are not to be cut, and where spiritual rituals and practices take place. Chinlung represents the Kirat commitment to environmental stewardship and the sacredness of the natural world.
